Position Summary:

The Machinist sets up, operates and adjusts various types of conventional or automatic machines including CNC machines, lathes, drill presses, grinders and other precision equipment and may assist Manufacturing Team Members in the set-up of machines. This person is responsible for ensuring all print requirements are satisfied, working in a safe manner, and ensuring all operational requirements are satisfied for inventory and labor reporting.¬  This position reports to the Operations Manager.


Essential Job Functions:


  • Performs a wide variety of duties to set up and operate CNC machines. Performs diversified and complex operations on one or more machines simultaneously as required.¬ 

  • Capable of setting up jobs, running jobs and inspecting parts with minimal supervision.¬ 

  • Requires basic knowledge of various metal and of measurements used in machining processes in order to provide technical leadership.

  • Completes change overs without assistance, able to write basic CNC programs, post-edit CNC programs to fine-tune processes for optimal performance and is able to read, find errors and troubleshoot programs.¬ 

  • Inspects and understands when to replace cutting tools during set up.¬ 

  • Works from prints and documentation to complete set ups for appropriate operational sequences; select tools, spindle speeds, tool feed rates and chucking/holding requirements in accordance with materials and set up documentation.

  • Capable of performing all "external" setup tasks for the next job, while the machine is running.

  • Possesses basic algebra, trigonometry, and problem solving abilities.

  • Reads prints to recognize specifications for various surfaces being machined. Works from drawings and written instructions to create parts with established CNC programs.¬ 

  • Establish proper tool offsets and can make necessary adjustments to produce parts to print.¬ 

  • Edits programs as needed to meet overall part tolerance requirements.¬ 


  • Understands all aspects of operating machines (every switch/button) and can proficiently run multiple machines simultaneously in the department.

  • Demonstrates ability to effectively use all necessary measuring tools in order to assure conformance to print.

  • Inspects work pieces at beginning of and throughout production run to insure part meets tolerance requirements.

  • Understands and verifies tolerances for machined surfaces.¬ 

  • Detects worn tools and replaces tooling as appropriate during run.

  • Performs preventative maintenance as needed on assigned equipment.

  • Advises supervisor of conduct that may violate rules, policies, and procedures.

  • Can train other machinists on CNC troubleshooting and operation.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum¬ 4 years' experience in a manufacturing environment¬ 

  • Knowledge of CNC machining and programming operations as generally acquired in one to three years of trades training or vocational schooling

  • 3-5 years of experience in setting up, operating and programming CNC machine


Education and Certification Qualification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent education

  • Associates degree preferred


Physical Requirements: (To be met with or without accommodations)

  • Stand 10 hours a day

  • Good manual dexterity

  • Eye hand coordination and attention to detail

  • Ability to bend, twist and turn

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
